The Sierra Nevada has the highest peaks in the Peninsula (Mulhacén: 3,482 metres high, and Veleta: 3,392 metres high), and a National Park, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve. The almost perpetual snow provides a system of torrents, rivers and streams that water the sierras, ravines and valleys, creating many aquifers and springs. The diverse ecosystems of this mountain range ensure the immense natural wealth of this unique spot.

Practising winter sports like ski or snowboard is also possible in the mountains in Granada, especially at the Pradollano winter resort. The Ski resort of Sierra Nevada is located in the municipal term of Monachil, only 25 minutes to Granada by car. You can rent a car at Granada airport, but if you arrive in Malaga, Almeria, Murcia, Valencia, Jerez or Seville you will find a wide selection of car hire companies as well.

Sierra Nevada is paradise for snow lovers. The main ski resort of the south of Europe, where there are more days of sun per year, is the perfect place to practice all the white sports.
With more than 65 kilometres of skiable pistes, the resort also offers a wide range of leisure activities, including skating rinks, and heated swimming pools. Many companies promote adventure sports here (quadbikes, cycle touring, horse riding, etc.), and aerial sports like microlight flying or paragliding, both in the Sierra Nevada National Park and in the Sierra de Huétor National Park.

The quality of the facilities and services, next to its animated atmosphere, make of the resort a point of contact for snow lovers, it has an international level recognition as it demonstrates the numerous ski competitions that hosts.

To the south of the province of Granada, the immense, beautiful beaches of the Costa Tropical unfold. The tropical weather of the coast makes it a nice place to visit every time of the year. The mild temperatures invite the visitor to walk along its beaches and discover the peaceful coves and cliffs or to visit the inland villages with their spectacular landscapes.

Water sports can be practised all year round, thanks to the area’s microclimate. The towns of Almuñécar, Salobreña and Motril are places where visitors can enjoy both the beaches and lovely historic quarters, well worth visiting. The Granada Costa Tropical, on the Mediterranean coast, is in the south of the province. To get there, one option is to take a plane to the airports of Almería, Málaga or Granada an book a rental car with one of the many car hire companies at these airports. Granada car hire is relatively cheap compared with car hire in places like Madrid or Barcelona.

The last kingdom to be reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs has an incredible artistic and historic heritage. Moorish and Christian elements go hand in hand in the streets of Granada. The Gran Vía de Colón and the Avenida de los Reyes Católicos will lead the visitor to Renaissance monuments and to the most important districts.

The palace complexes of the Alhambra and Generalife, have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. This artistic gem of Arab Granada, built between the 13th and the 15th centuries, is composed of many rooms linked by courtyards, gardens and fountains. The Generalife, the summer residence of the Nazarite Monarchs, is also located on this hill, along with the Palace of Carlos V. It is a Renaissance-style building, where the visitor can go to the Provincial Fine Arts Museum and the Alhambra Museum.

The Albaicín quarter is located on another one of the city’s hills. Narrow and steep streets with a deep Arab flavour are filled with traditional villas with gardens, old mosques on top of which churches have been erected and little squares like San Nicolás and San Cristóbal. Both these spots enjoy great views over the Alhambra and the peaks of Sierra Nevada. The highest part of the hill is taken up by the district of Sacromonte, which is the ideal place for seeing the typical cave houses of Granada, flamenco dancing (zambras) and the Santo Sepulcro.

We thank the staff from hispacar for their contribution about Granada. If you travel to Andalusia we strongly recommend Granada car hire to also discover the hidden gems of the province. A rent a car is a must if you want to visit some of the many little white villages in Granada by car. Hispacar is the leading spanish car rental broker for cheap Granada car rental and many other destinations in Andalusia.

Granada is located in the heart of Andalucia at the feet of the Sierra Nevada and quite close to the Mediterranean sea. A place with gentle summers and warm winters perfect to enjoy snow sports in a privilegiated district with the highest peaks of the Iberian Peninsula.

Federico García Lorca Airport is located in the town of Chauchina, 15 km. away from the city of Granada. Air Europa, Iberia, Ryanair, Spanair and Vueling are just some of the companies who include Granada airport in their network, with flights departing from the following airports: Barcelona, Girona, Madrid, Melilla, Palma de Mallorca, Liverpool, London Stansted, Nottingham East Midlands, Frankfurt Hahn, Bologna, Milano Bergamo.

Travellers may also choose to book a flight to nearby airports like Seville or Malaga and even the airports of Jerez, Almeria, Alicante or Murcia are options to take into consideration. The modern connections of Granada city make it, for example, two hours away from Seville or one hour from Málaga by motorway. The A-92 motorway connects this province with the East Mediterranean and with West Andalucía. The A-44 connects it with Madrid and the whole south of the peninsula.

If you’re planning a short break to Granada than you should make absolutely sure to visit at least the Alhambra and the Albaicin.

The complex of the Alhambra and the Generalife, a World Heritage Site, is the most emblematic, known and visited monument of Granada. Its rooms and gardens are the higher expression of the Muslim art in Europe. The monumental complex is formed by the Alcazaba, fortified military area; the Palaces, royal residence; and the palace and the gardens of the Generalife, summer royal residence.

The Albaicín and the Sacromonte are two of the districts with more colour, enchantment and history of the city of Granada. To wonder around the Albaicín is to make a trip to its moriscs roots in as well as an enjoyment for the senses. The Sacromonte neighbourhood is famous by its caves, in which the gypsies continue celebrating every night their flamenco songs and dance celebrations.
